The value of solar energy
Is solar energy worth the investment?
The argument in favour of solar technology is a very strong one, both financially and environmentally.
Having recovered the cost of your solar energy equipment and its installation, you’ll benefit from reduced fuel bills as ‘plugging in’ to the power of the sun costs nothing, other than the initial outlay and any fees for ongoing maintenance.
Savings could be significant, dependent upon the:
- number of solar panels, tubes or tiles installed; around five square meters of coverage is recommended for maximum exposure, with a smaller area bringing a proportionate return
- direction your roof – or wall – faces; if east to west through south, it will receive sunlight for most of the day: any area with an aspect within 90 degrees of south is ideal
- angle of the slope to which your panels are mounted; a rake of 30 to 45 degrees is considered optimum
- amount of shade near your panels; the less the better, as they will be able to absorb more solar radiation.
In addition, UK government and the energy industry are very keen to promote the use of sustainable resources, meaning that grants are often available to help with investment in solar technology. Find out more in the getting a grant section of our request quotes page.
You’ll start to enjoy a greener lifestyle as soon as your equipment has been installed.
By harnessing the power of the sun’s plentiful, free, rays your carbon footprint will be reduced as a result of not burning – or, more likely, using a smaller amount of – fossil fuels, meaning that less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
