HOW MUCH ENERGY CAN I PRODUCE

That question relies on a number of factors including:

a What direction the solar panels, tubes or tiles face

b How many panels are used

c The amount of shade blocking light from the panels, and

d The angle of the slope the panels are mounted on.


INSTALLATION COSTS

This is extremely variable and depends on the size of the system, where it is sited, and whether it generates electricity or water. Each installation is unique and it pays to do your homework thoroughly and gain more than one quote from approved installers.

If you are considering major repairs or changes to your roof it could be a good time to install a solar-power system, as it may offset some of the cost, especially if you are eligible to receive a grant.
 

ARE THERE GRANTS?

The legislation on Government grants for solar systems is in the process of change to get up-to-date information go to energy.grants.co.uk. Grants are not payable on DIY schemes.

Its £10 million scheme has been extended until 2010.

To obtain a grant the installation must have been put in place by a certified BERR installer (see below) and have used certified products.

To find a list of installers and products go to the Low Carbon Buildings programme website (see below).

The property must also have a good degree of energy efficiency through aspects such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, heating governed by timers and thermostats and the use of low energy light bulbs is also considered.

Once a grant is received it must be spent within four months.
