Choosing an installer

As an alternative to DIY – and essential if you make a successful application for a grant – we’d recommend hiring the services of professional who is:

• a certified BIS (Department for Business Innovation & Skills) installer; or
• registered with the Low Carbon Buildings programme.

In addition, if your chosen contractor is a member of a professional body, such as the Solar Trade Association, they will work to strict guidelines, using ethical practices.

Installer’s checklist

As well as helping with grant applications, any professional solar energy installer will provide a:

• site survey, including aspects such as:
• roof strength
• compatibility of existing and solar water heating systems
• feasibility study re:
• energy generation
• potential financial savings
• written explanation of building regulations and your legal obligations
• written quote
• date for installation and an estimate of how long the job will take
• written invoice
• warranty for their work.
