Getting a grant

Grants are available for solar energy initiatives from the Energy Saving Trust, an independent UK-based organisation that focuses on promoting action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The nature of these grants varies from one part of the country to another:

• Scotland
• rest of the UK, excluding Scotland.

And some areas, such as London, run their own schemes, so it always pays to make local enquiries before buying any equipment or starting any installation work. You may also need to obtain planning permission.

Government grants are only available for installations completed by someone that is:

• a certified BIS (Department for Business Innovation & Skills) installer; or
• registered with the Low Carbon Buildings programme.

To qualify for most grants, you must have taken steps to minimise the amount of energy consumed, eg:

• good standards of insulation in cavity walls and lofts
• use of low energy light bulbs
• temperature control through room and radiator thermostats.

Some grants have a limited life span and need to be spent within a few months: make sure you’re aware of any such limitations.
