Interlocking concrete tiles are not an easy tile to beat when it comes to cost-effectiveness. Larger than many other types of tiles, less are needed to cover the roof.
Their weight can mean the roof timbers need to be strengthened before the tiles are used.
Concrete slates are also available and while cheaper than natural slate they can still be expensive.
CEMENT AND FIBRE
A combination of cement and fibre produces a man-made version of slate or even an interlocking tile. The downside is that they do not have the life-expectancy of a stone slate.
RESIN SLATE
These use ground slate waste mixed with glass fibre resin, which is then moulded into a replica of a natural slate
COLOURS AND STYLES
Man-made slates come in a range of styles simulating natural slate.
Although they cost less than nature’s version you need to check carefully the colour and thickness if you are looking to buy some to repair an existing roof, to ensure a good match.
Also check how they are fixed to the roof. If a completely different system is used, you should try and source something nearer the original used when the roof was last tiled.
