Clay tiles have been around for centuries and today some of them are still handmade using processes more than 250 years old.
Handmade tiles can have irregularities as pre-cut slabs of clay are thrown into moulds by hand. The finish is inevitably sand-faced as this is the material used to line the moulds.
The majority of clay tiles are manufactured. The process beaks down the clay in crushers and rollers to become fine particles.
The addition of water allows a strip of clay to be cut into pieces large enough to be pressed into tiles.
Like hand made tiles they are dried and fired in a kiln.
Both process have the advantage in these environmentally-aware times of being able to recycle raw material.
WHY USE CLAY
The reasons are manifold here we list just a few:
The look is an important factor. They add character to a building, and are accepted as part of our national architectural heritage
Although clay tiles will weather and mellow, they do not fade
Tiles made from clay, rather than concrete or cement, are a natural product made using environmentally-friendly processes
They are cost efficient while being a quality product
Clay tiles come in a variety of options in style and colour, and
Clay tiles are equally good for a refurbishment or a new build property.
STYLES
There are two main styles of tiles:
Flat - these are laid in regular overlapping rows.
Pantiles - with an S-shaped profile - adjacent tiles overlock resulting in the ridge pattern, which is a feature of many roofs.
