CARRYING OUT AN ASSESSMENT

If you are regularly carrying our repairs to your roof - it could well be time to consider replacing it completely or at least a section of it.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

From ground or ladder level:

Look for slipped or disjointed tiles. If tiles or slates have recently moved there will be a difference in the colour to those around them.

At the ridgeline check for gaps in mortar joints, and at flashings at abutments and around the chimneystacks. One of the most obvious signs is pieces of mortar on the ground or laying on other tiles or slates.

The way to spot delamination on slates - which will let in moisture - is to look for a flaky or powdery surface.

  • ROOF LADDERS

    If you want to actually go onto the roof it is always advisable to use proper roof ladders. These can be hired or you can hire or buy the wheel and hook sections needed to covert an ordinary ladder.

  • FROM THE LOFT

    As well as checking the state of a roof from outside it is obviously a good idea to get into the loft or roof space and check there as well.

    Look for damp on timbers or staining on tiles or slates - these are often the first indication of fine cracks.

    If there is no felt lining in the roof a sure indication of a problem is daylight visible through the roof.

  • A GOOD MATCH

    If you are replacing tiles or slates look at surrounding properties to get a good idea of the colours and styles which suit similar properties. If you live in a semi-detached property and chose something completely different to your neighbour you could well spoil the look of both properties.
