Never assume that you know what alterations you can make to your home
- get advice from builders, architects, and the planning officer at your
local authority.
Planning permission from the council is always needed if the building
is listed or in a conservation area.
Although some alterations can be done to some homes without planning
permission it always pays to check if they fall within the volume limits
of the council. Once features such as dormer windows are introduced the
area becomes part of the calculation. There are also rules concerning
their height - they cannot project over the ridge.
Alterations to form a gable end roof may also need planning permission.
Permission from the Neighbours
If your loft extension uses a party wall as part of the development,
you may need the written consent of your neighbour. A click on to www.communites.gov.uk will take you to the website of the Department of Communities and Local
Government where you will be able to access guidance notes to the Party
Wall Act 1996.
Although your local authority does not implement the Act it may be able
to offer advice.
