The point of insulating your loft is quite simply - money!
Why let you hard earn cash disappear out of the top of your house every single day?
By not insulating your loft you lose 25 per cent of the heat - look at your electricity, gas or oil bills, that probably equates to hundreds of pounds during the year.
The problem with the loft is - out of sight, out of mind - while decorating rooms or replacing furniture might happen because you can see they need doing, loft insulation doesn’t fall into that category.
BUT I HAVE LOFT INSUALTION
You might have loft insulation, BUT do you have enough?
The most common form of loft insulation is mineral wool and the recommended depth for that is 270mm (8 inches), which equates to a reasonably thick covering, not just a thin layer.
Every day you put off tackling installing proper insulation is another day you have thrown good money away, and the more energy you use the more damaging carbon dioxide emission (CO2) are released into the atmosphere.
If you take into consideration that the loft insulation should last for up to four decades, it isn’t long before it is paying its way!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Cold air attracts warm it to it - so when it’s cold outside the warm air in your home is attracted out and into the atmosphere.
Insulation quite literally muffles this and makes it harder for the heat to escape. It has lots of air pockets in it trapping the heat in, Measurements on the effectiveness of loft insulation have shown that it can reduce heat loss by up to 95 per cent.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED LOFT INSULATION?
The simple answer is go and have a look, and measure the depth of the insulation.
Economically if you have a loft and it isn’t insulated then you are throwing money away.
If you still aren’t sure, call in an installer who can also advise on what is needed and how to tackle potential problems caused by condensation when the loft space becomes cooler.
